Summon Her

“Is there something I’m supposed to say to summon her?” Robin stared at the silver leaf on her gloved hand. But it didn’t tell her what to do. Nor could she remember the Queen of All Trees mentioning that, either. I don’t think I even asked her about that. But there must be a way to summon her with this leaf, or why would she have left it behind?

“I don’t know. What did she tell you when she gave you the leaf?” Strella struggled to hold on to Ran as he reached for the leaf. Somehow he worked his arm free of the cloak wrapped around him, and his little hand strained to grab it out of her hand.

“She talked about hope. It’s our greatest gift, and as long as there’s hope, there’s a way.” Robin turned the leaf over, then shrugged. Maybe she should give it to him.

“In that case, I hope we’ll get some help before we freeze.” Strella held Ran in one arm as she tried to tuck his arm and his little hand back under the cloak before he got too cold.

“Don’t joke about that.” Robin shot her a look, even though neither child was old enough to understand what they were talking about. Still, she didn’t think it was good for them to hear such talk.

“I’m not joking. I wish I were somewhere warm with a hot meal in front of me and a hot bath waiting for me.” Strella sighed and sat on a boulder so she could lay Ran across her lap and swaddled him again so he couldn’t escape or catch cold.

“I wish for that too, and I hope Sarn can escape the Wild Hunt.” Robin glanced at the trees, blocking all sight of him. How could he lose the Wild Hunt in the forest? She didn’t recall anything he could use for that. But he must have a way or he wouldn’t have run off like that. Be safe, Sarn. Your son needs you.

“Don’t worry about him. He’s got magic. Worry about us. We’ve got small children.” Strella cradled a wriggling Ran after she finished rewrapping him.

“I have magic too.” Robin didn’t mean to say that aloud, but she didn’t want to retract it either. After all, Strella saw her use the glowing threads, so there was no reason to hide.

Could I use those magical strings to find Mount Eredren? Robin tore her gaze from the leaf and glanced down. The snow shimmered as glowing green threads appeared. They littered the ground. Why didn’t I think of using them before? Because Sarn was here and he was so powerful. I barely know how to use these threads.

The Wild Hunt had thrown everything out of whack, and she was reeling from it. I hope she’s okay too. She was a strange girl, but she doesn’t deserve anything bad happening to her.

“Would you look at that,” Strella whispered as she elbowed her in the side.

“Look at what?” Robin scanned the clearing until her gaze snagged on a silver glow approaching them.
